Bedford Rally through the eyes of a Fox

After a 5 hour trek down to Bedford I landed at the campsite at about 7:30 and was directed to Dave 2 jugs who looked a little worse for ware after the previous evenings entertainment, Dave instantly made me feel welcome and although not looking very well, he spent some time talking to me, then introduced me to all the other Daves who were attending the event (there was a few of us). So I pitched my tent and off round the camp site I went to meet other members who also looked a little peaky but everyone shook my hand and introduced themselves and sent time telling me what fields were best and where items had been recovered and then they produced and showed me what had been found. I got my camera and started getting video of the wondrous things that these new friends had been lucky enough to find. I have taken a few screen shots off the video as you will see below.

Muddy Mick, This character is one of the members that made my rally an enjoyable experience.. Hes outrageous!

    Micks finds

IronMask made himself known to me and by accident I called him American (Shock, Horror) he forgave me and then gave me the customized headphones I had ordered. And I have to tell you this guy makes a brilliant product and they are very well made with no cheap bits/bobs and what a difference they make with the Etrac. I would highly recommend getting a set from him and as he is a detector user he knows at what angle the cables should come from and he even tests the strength of the head band to make sure it wont break. Brilliant volume control and cuts down on all the squeaking and squealing that comes through ears with the normal Koss phones that come with the Etrac

    IronMask

    Iron Masks Saxon Pennys

Another Penny was found by Jay69 who I was introduced as he was having a reviver from the previous evening, How anyone can drink a bottle of ale at 8:30am amazes me.

    Jay69

    Jays Saxon Penny

After chatting to these guys I made my way back to the tent to prepare for the days digging and it was at this point that I realized that I had pitched my tent next to Jim Leonard who writes an online magazine called Relic Hunter. I have admired Jim for quite a while now, not only because he comes across as a true gent and avid detectrist, but because of the time and effort he puts into producing his magazine which is free, so that others can also enjoy and see whats going on. It was great to chat with Jim and I wish I could have spent a bit more time talking to him as he really is an ambassador for the hobby. Jim showed be a fantastic posy ring that he had found on his final day of detecting and again I manage to get a few shots for you to see.

There was another American attending the rally a gentleman by the name of Lester, a really nice chap but boy can he talk, all who were there will indefinably relate to that one. Lester found a fantastic silver seal that I would die for and I think many others who had seen it close up would have done also. Lester gave an in depth account of how he found it, where he found it, how deep it was and even what type of soil it was in. He also found a couple of nice hammered which I took a shot of. Here are a few shots of Lester and his amazing silver seal.

I am so sorry but even tho I thought I had got Egg chips n Gravy (Nick) stater I must have forgot to click the record button and I do apologize to him for that as it was a wonderful find and I am sick as a dog about not taking photos as well as video.

I had good couple of days meeting and chatting to members of the forum and a cannot thank you all enough for the way you made myself and other new people welcome. I know Stuart from Leyland really enjoyed it and hes only been detecting for 2 months, and he found 2 hammered a couple of roman and a few other bits and bobs.

My best finds are below and one of which I aint got a clue what it is, but I always find a mystery item no matter where I go detecting. If you can help identify it, it would be appreciated.

    And finally......

An absolute massive thank you to Dave 2 Jugs for making this happen. Even tho my finds count was minimal, it does not matter. I made new friends and you gave me a chance of finding a Celtic stater or a Saxon penny which in my part of the country looks to be an impossible feat. The organization was splendid, the route to the fields we were to detect was well marked with signs, the breakfast bar was a mega bonus. I for one enjoyed this rally and will be looking forward to another chance of a get together(Wife reliant) in the future.

The Video footage I took of the rally will be up as soon as I can get it done. I have had a quick look through the clips and I know it will bring happy memories to them who attended.

Well done Dave 2 Jugs and everyone who helped to organize and run this event.

    Dave

There was a hell of a lot of Hammered found over the week and I missed getting footage of most due to people leaving the day I arrived as there were off to attend the Weekend Wanderers Rally. I also missed a nice selection of cut halves that were found next to the campsite I think a total of 9 were found. I did see them but never managed to video them. I have no idea what the total number of Hammered or Roman were but from what I had seen and been told about it was a good number.

The Bedford rally is organised to compliment the Corfe rally and only occurs once a year!
