Thread: Any Ideas.

    Any Ideas.

Found this a couple of days ago, as you can see it as a rim, it is curved, I worked out that the whole item must have been about 10 to 12 inches in diameter. It as a green patina although it doesnt show very well in the photo, it definatly is not cooper, my thought would have been bronze. Sorry about the quality of the photo I took it with my phone.

Belongs to a pot of sorts? I have several similar finds from different fields, sadly never recovered a whole pot yet No idea of age of either yours or mine?

yes ive got some bronze fragments like that - it does make me wonder if these pieces broke off in transit - or whether the rest of the pot is close by or just out of detecting range - then it makes me think what was in the pot or is in the pot - then im thinking wheres that pot - youve got to love this hobby

    Re: Any Ideas.

If it were from a pot it would have been awful thin at the bottom, what doesnt show in the photo is the bottom edge which is very thin almost sharp, so let say for instance the pot was 4 inches deep it would have been wafer thin at the bottom, thats why I never suggested a pot.

Can't do any better with the guesses than the others (except say, ya, I have a box of stuff like this too now that I can't puzzle out. ) but I know if they found it on Time Team next to a brick they'd use it as the basis to construct a wild and ambitious computer model showing that there was a whole Eutruscan city where ever you found it that no one knew about before. Go back, find the rest of it and find the brick!

Did they have jet engines in the medieval period?

It is a medieval cooking pot rim and should be recorded. The age of the pot can be estimated from rim sherds but not from body sherds. Your FLO will be pleased to see it!

Query......Why do folks assume that they know what is ancient junk? If in doubt - let your FLO see it, they won't be upset even if it is junk and you might get a pleasant surprise!

Oh NO! He's about to go off on one again!

are these FLO's any good ? or just kids who study history - finding out the detail and trying to ascertain its origins is as much part of the hobby for me as finding it - they can have a look when i think i know what it is - im not suggesting for one minute not to report finds - but neither should they get all the fun of trying to id artefacts

    Re: Any Ideas.

We have a FLO that comes to our local club every couple of months, she gives on the spot IDs and if she is doesnt know she gives you a receipt for it, takes it away and on her next vist gives you your find back with a report.

Yes, generally speaking they are good. I think it is a bit strong to suggest that they are merely "just kids who study history". They have a degree for a start and quite a few will become PhDs in time. They are very knowledgable and have access to advanced help if needed.
I always have a go at identifying my finds and even after 30-odd years I sometimes get it wrong or haven't a clue, but by seeing the reports one gets better at identification. Finding out the detail is good fun - but the books you will need often cost £50 or more and one won't do - and the internet is not the answer to everything either - there is an awful lot of useless buffalo bagels masquerading as genuine information, and despite the ease of emailing and digital photography, the MkI eyeball is still the best!

The East Norfolk club has always been very lucky in having between two and four archaeologists at every meeting - try to get yours to come every month or it gets to be three months before you get your finds back which does take the gloss off a bit!
"Our" archaeologists are automatically elected to Honorary Membership of the club and we are delighted to have them there as friends as well as professionals.

Dammit! He's gone off on another one.

barrie - fair comments and i agree in many respects but not all
university degrees dont mean that much to me - certainly over the recent years - im sorry to the folk studying hard and dont mean to be putting anyone down as we still have some great brains here in the uk so im not saying we dont produce some great clever folk at the pinnacle - but no doubt there has been alot of dumbing down and making pass rates easier to achieve - its makes us look a cleverer nation ! political propaganda etc

so my observation's is the general pool of graduates are not as bright shall we say they once were....and dare i say it some buffalo bagels in the sect - buffalo bagels ? did i just say that

I cannot argue with that! I could list subjects that are not fit for degrees but we have successive governments who seem to believe that everybody can reach the academic top. Buffalo bagels again.

You've done it again! This must rank as some sort of a record - 3 rants in a day......

    I don't think it's part of a pot.
It looks more like the rim of a bronze age Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie dish.
The rim is shaped like that because although Fray Bentos knew how to braze lids on these
dishes, nobody had an opener that could cut through such thick metal.
I suggest you get in touch with Fray Bentos, and ask if they are willing to outbid
the British Museum for this rare artefact.
