Perhaps there’s case for re-examining your detecting technique.

John, for some reason that link doesn't work.
The page starts to download, then a static white blank-download data stops cold then 'Done but with errors'!

Re: Understanding Discrimination in Detecting. Should I Dig?

The statement makes a hell of allot of sense really, and is one of the reasons why when i bought my F75 and used a simple two tone setting my finds increased dramatically. The More signals you dig the odds are bound to increase your success rate and visa versa.
I was digging nearly all higher tones and with minimal descrimination and was getting plenty of non ferrous finds.

Its also one of the reasons that that i believe the Ctx 3030 will after some time come in to its own if the Tones are adjusted in a way that suits the users ears and senses and where sometimes a simple two tone setting will increase a users finds rate.

I often wandered about some of the great finds that some absoloute beginners have fouund like the Gold Torks found by Dave Booth at Stirling with the Garrett ace 150, and what the tones were really like, and whether an experienced detectorists would have just went over it.
I suppose its why many detectorists advocate to dig all the iffy signal,s just incase it is a good target.

the article its the nail on the head - the more you dig the better your chances.
I listen to people here talk about tones/vdi read outs - and they seem to think they know what they are going over everytime - they dont!
there are many variables that can affect tones/ readings - 2 coins different compositions etc etc just so many variables that affect the machine - ironic rreally that expensive machines mainly offer discrimination - it what your paying for and i can understand in countrys where the history is not huge.

So beach hunting / park hunting you want the discrim where the likely hood of finding artefacts/ancient finds are not likely.....but not here in the uk - you want to be digging as much as possible - you just cant be sure - it doesnt matter how good one thinks one is

ill be honest my garrett 250 was amazing and i will never sell it - the detector is deep / simple and very effective and nothing lives with it for value for money ...nothing.

i have used expensive machines such as the etrac / deus ( which i still use and love ...still think there silly money though ).
ofcourse there will be people of differing ages/health that will really want to dig only good stuff and i can understand them wanting the discrim options too.

My biggest learning lesson of this hobby - is the hype given to machines - its hype.

A good quality basic unit such as the garrett 250 i feel punches well above its weight - and when you compare costs well ..you realise that most the high end units are a rip off.

    infact that would be a great field test - garrett 250 v ctx 3030 - £200 v £2000 ...i think many would be shocked.

    Finally downloaded.
It had something to do with the privacy settings in IE8 blocking cookies and your site. Had to allow all cookies from your site and also add your site to 'Trusted Sites' in IE8's privacy settings. Strange, since i've downloaded your pages before without any problems.

    Anyhow, thought provoking article.
I've searched this trash infested park where i found two sterling silver rings and a silver coin (all deep) using max. discrimination allowing only non-ferrous coins. Also liberated about a hundred clads there.

The last time i was there, i figured there also had to be at least one old gold ring waiting to be unearthed. This time i was on the hunt for gold and would dig each and every target in the gold ID area (if indicated deep only) which also happens to be smack dab in the pull tab ID area also. After unearthing dozens of deep pull tabs and other aluminum junk in a row, i gave up on the idea. My arms, knees and back suffered from all that useless digging.

Yes, i think there is such a thing as 'dumb' beginner's luck - only cause they havn't yet dug hundreds of 10" deep holes only to find a piece of worthless junk.

And as Kyle mentions, sometimes the 'lesser' detectors can and do find good stuff. My Garrett ATPro in the short time i've used it found one silver ring and two silver coins along with a couple hundred clads. Maybe i'll give my eTRAC a rest for a while.

Changing detectors once in a while just might bring on that 'dumb' beginner's luck!
