Not sure about that one. Mine was a Radio Shack Micronta (4001) that I got from my grandparents in the early 80s....actually found quite a bit with it!

A BFO "coinfinder" made by Sol Invictus. I think this was one of Sol invictus`s first attempts on making detectors being as it was BFO .

jon_jn , I `m pretty sure it was CScope (under the trade name of " Candle International " in those days ) who were making a 1000K in " kit form " . IF my memory serves me right , Catalogue companys such as "Littlewoods etc " were doing them as kits to buy .

Ha! I even remember that blue box! My best memory was my Grandpa coming home one day and trying to keep himself from throttling me as I sat proudly on the front lawn, having just dug up a huge swath of grass to expose the top of the septic tank (it had only been a few inches underground). I thought I had found a pirate's chest or something and couldn't wait to show him.

Re: What was your first detector??

First detector was a C-Scope TR200 and thought it was the bees knees, nearly got me a divorce though, I think it was about £54 from Robinsons in Horncastle, and that was a lot of money back in 1977, still got it and works.............of a sort. Happy days, just wish I had todays kit back then like we all do.

The K1000 as Jeb says was made by Candle International, through Joan Allen who founded the business, I understand Joan passed away a few years ago.

Compass VLF bought back in the late 70s. Forget the model number. It found plenty of coins, some rings and silver.
Could never get it to ground balance correctly, eventually got pitched in the trash.

    Digging junk since 1963

Mine was a WWII mine detector, exactly like the one pictured.

I had a row of Civil War trenches running through the hill in my back yard and convinced my father to get me the detector on my 13th birthday.

    mm7509.jpg

It was a brute to use, but worked well on large items like cannon balls. It ate batteries. Once you found an object, you'd turn the coil on edge to pin-point your find. The coil was made of wood. It had joining handles and you'd wear the pack on your back. You had ear phones for tone (constant tuning) and a meter to look at the scale of reflectivity.

It's a far cry from my CTX 3030 (it's even got a clock) if you ever got a car in the 60's, clocks were an option.

Next came a MetroTech...then a White's 5DB, the first great VLF machine (several series I owned), Fisher (many series), Garrett, and finally Minelab.

Cannot go back as far as you Ga Digger, but my instument was the Arado 650. It was slow, but taught me how to detect. I still have it in near new condition, but would never sell my first love. You know, I still managed to find more than a lot of blokes using far more modern machines, usually because their swings were far too fast and high. You all know the type LOL.

Re: What was your first detector??

My first was an old C Scope can,t remmember model, was very complicated, it was in the early 70s. The one i had was the swan kneck handle type 6 knobs and a toggle on end of handle + Meter. I think it was a tr model also. I had some good times with it. Then in late 70s if my mem serves me right i bought a second hand C Scope 770 vlf tr, And that was the one that got me hooked proper, I loved it, Infact so much that i still have it to this day. Unfortunatly it lives in the airing cupboard But has,nt been used for yrs. I now use my trusty explorer xs, And also have a garrett euro, For those lazy days or just to let friends and family have a go whilst at the beach......Love the hobby, Never looked back

Re: What was your first detector??

My first was in about 2008 , I got a Bounty Hunter for X-mas. Finally opened the box and put it together in 2009. Used if about 6 hours and when on google looking what to buy. Had never known about Minelab and I read few reviews and ordered an Explorer SE pro and joined the MLO. Went to my first Corfe in 2009 with that SE. Saw everyone running around with E-tracs so I decided to have one of those for Corfe 2010. Went to WW rally before Corfe and after only a day and a half using the E-trac I found #1 from my wish list. "Celtic gold". #2 a hammered ( cut quarter). Then a few days later at Salisbury I found a washed silver denarius.
Now I have no detector but I imagine my next one will be a CTX or whatever is better by the time I can afford one. Won't be anytime soon though.

Re: What was your first detector??

That build it yourself machine was a C-scope. A few "new" ones appeared on the market about 15 years ago, I think they'd been discovered in a store room somewhere. My list of detectors is below.

My first was a Joan Allen BFO, not a good machine, the first time it died it took months to get it (or more accuratly another one) back. The second time it died I hit it with a hammer.
    Finding ancient rubbish since 1977.
    With help from:
    Joan Allen BFO (yuk)
    Whites CG3, BC5D, CM6000/S2, Surfmaster.
    Tesoro Cutlass, Bandido
    Laser B1, and Hi-power
    Sov XS2a pro (that's better)
    E-trac (perfect)
