electrolysis how to and my latest hammy

found my 7th hammy with the ctx yesterday and like a lot of coins i have found recently it was a bit ropey looking, so it was time for a bit of electrolysis.
i thought i would share with you guys how i do this.........if you do try this i think its best to do it out side if your using salt otherwise you could go BOOM or die from gas poisoning but its up to you.....i do it in the shed with the doors open
ok so first off get an old phone charger or transformer no more than 12v output, one large tub, some salt half a hand full should do, a spanner or anything stainless steal that you dont mind destroying.
fill the tub up with water and add the salt then cut the plug that goes into the phone off your charger,
expose about 1 inch of wire plug in the phone charger and stick both wires in the salt water to see which one makes bubbles, the one that bubbles you attach to the coin the other to your spanner when you have done this stick the spanner in one side of the tank an the coin in the other..........leave to fizzle for a few minutes take out, give the coin a little brush and job done.
it may take a couple of goes to clean the coin properly and it can take a wile before the coin starts to fizz.

ps if you go boom or die from gas poisoning dont blame me i was only trying to help

    sorry i was only playing.
im not sure really but i like electrolysis because no pressure is applied to the coin and no abrasives are used.

There's one thing Tombs,if your marmite smell's like the spit and foil method ,it must have gone off big style

chrome vandiom or however you spell it? that one certainly wasn't cos it was rusty as hell...they only say to use stainless because it lasts longer.

Ive made a couple the exact same way mate, I found a nice addition is to fit crocodile clips to the ends and strip some short lengths of copper wire to make cradles for my finds, this way I can have the next find ready to go in the dip without wasting time.
I use really cheap stainless spoons in mine they seem to do the trick.

I used to do the electrolysis method with stainless croc clips, but now I use a much less time consuming method, which works just as well. Be warned, it is probably best not to use either method for really good coins. Certainly jewellery, especially beach silver can go through this system.
    1) Take a small plastic dish 2) cut some aluminium foil about twice the size of your dish and fold in half. 3) cover the inside of your dish with the foil 4) add 2 teaspoons of bicarb and an oxidised silver find 5) cut 100 5mmx5mm pieces of foil and place in dish 6) boil kettle and add the hot water to the dish. 7) make a cup of coffee while your at it. 8) leave your item to soak for 12 hours 9) remove your item and if necessary rub with fresh foil and the bicarb solution. For beach jewellery a good way to improve the item is to use brasso. Have fun.
