Looks good, volume control would be good. The only thing I don't like about the otherwise excellent Garrett is the push on - push off switch. The push and hold switch on my previous ancient probe was much better for me - it saved me from continually putting the damn thing in my pocket without switching it off. I don't like the holster supplied because I don't want another bit of kit dangling about!

I must be careful, I could turn into a real grumpy old git!

oh yeah? Are you going to be able to take pictures or tell us how it is?
It has to be better than the Garrett since Minelab has had plenty of time to study it. Hopefully it's about the same price.

I dont mean to disrespect the new bit of kit from Minelab here before its even released but it
will have a long way to go to impress me the way my garret has.
for the past three years or so my trusty little garrets been used and abused to the point(pardon the pun)of destruction.
even the scraper on the sides been rounded off due to constant abuse/use.
ive dropped it in puddles, dried it out and it still refuses to give up the ghost.
The battery life's awesome and its the second bit of kit on my check list(even beating spade)when i go out.
I literally couldn't work without it.

    A few random thoughts:

    1) When we talk about prices in the UK we usually refer to total end price. Therefore when you talk price are you including or excluding VAT (i.e. Sales Tax)? That adds a whopping 20% on in the UK. So if Minelab retail at £100 the end price thanks to HM Government is £120. OK I know either way you still part with £120. But cannot really blame Minelab for every evil.

    2) Also go back to basic economics, regardless of how much it costs to produce what is the price point the market will stand. Again homework would have been done. What is more beneficial to Minelab sell x units at £250 or sell xxx units at £100 (assuming cost of production remains relatively constant). Again with pricing once you have milked the market at a higher price then start dropping, sell again, drop sell again until market saturation. At which point you bring out a new model and start all over again. Or if you are really smart you bring out a half slightly improved model (because people are will to buy regardless) before you bring out the whole new version. Apple does this so well with iPhones and iPads.

3)As it is a small transportable item and as FX rate is good get it in the US and ship/bring in to UK

I am sure that the UK prices are always higher even before taxes! Check on Microsoft programs for a start and I have heard it said about all manner of gear such as cameras. The problem with Minelab sems to be that they will cut off a dealer selling outside their "area", plus you are likely to have trouble with warranties on what will be a "grey import"

They have us by the short hairs!

Further thought is that it is that competition now enters the market. We benefit because a new player has entered the maket and threatens the near monopolistic conditions created by Garrett. Assuming that both products have a similar form, fit and function etc then the only thing the manufacturer can do not to lose market share is reduce price. So assuming a "gentlemen's agreement" between firms is not in place (not allowed by law) then my guess is the price of the Garrett Pro Pointer will fall.

    Competition always benefits the consumer.

well i am looking forward to this one coming out., the garret is awesome but i think it could be improved and more than anything it would be nice to have a choice of pin pointer when its time to get a new one.
i cant believe the negative attitude every one has when a new product is heard about! whats wrong with you guys? this could be a really smart bit of kit............or rubbish in which case dont buy one but surly it would be interesting to see what it can do?

I agree Swiss! Trouble is I've already got a Garrett - I'll have to use one in each hand - is there a noise cancel on the Minelab?
