A 14th century silver bag strap fitting found in a field near Luton has been declared as treasure by the coroner.
The 52mm x 27mm strap, found in Hyde last September, is believed to be for suspending a purse from a belt.
Bedfordshire Coroner David Morris ruled that the item can be classed as treasure as it contains the minimum 10 per cent precious metal and is old enough to meet classification criteria.
He said: “We can’t say at this stage whether the British Museum or the local Luton Museum wants the item, if a museum wants it they will have to pay the owner or landowner. Otherwise the owner can try and sell it at auction.”
